What does a 5,000-piece 9x12 drop cost?
The site’s example is $2,509 for printing and postage: $1,209 printing plus $1,300 postage. It assumes 5,000 pieces and self-managed mailing preparation.
These inputs were checked against the linked printer rate card and USPS page on September 13, 2026. Add design, payment processing, software, preparation, shipping extras, refunds and your time to make a complete operating budget. The calculator estimates the mailing subtotal.
The only three line items
For the physical mailing, separate printing, postage and preparation. Other business expenses belong in your full campaign budget as well.
Printing: the referenced rate card specifies 14pt stock, full color on both sides and UV gloss. Check shipping terms for your destination.
Postage: the current USPS EDDM Retail input is $0.26 per qualifying piece. Confirm it when ordering.
Preparation: bundling, facing slips, paperwork and delivery to the postal unit. Your time or a provider fee; it is not automatically included in printing.
The full cost table
| Format | Quantity | Printing | Postage | Subtotal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9x12 | 1,000 | $408 | $260 | $668 |
| 9x12 | 2,500 | $759 | $650 | $1,409 |
| 9x12 | 5,000 | $1,209 | $1,300 | $2,509 |
| 9x12 | 10,000 | $2,299 | $2,600 | $4,899 |
| 6x11 | 1,000 | $261 | $260 | $521 |
| 6x11 | 2,500 | $533 | $650 | $1,183 |
| 6x11 | 5,000 | $736 | $1,300 | $2,036 |
A printer can require preset order quantities. Postage is based on the actual pieces mailed. The table assumes those counts match; use separate counts if you order extra cards for samples or to reach a print tier.
Postage: verify the rate before ordering
Use the USPS EDDM page as the source for Retail rates and rules. Qualifying 9x12 and 6x11 pieces sent through the same Retail service have identical per-piece postage; differences in these totals come from printing.
A 10,000-piece pricing row is a cost calculation, not permission to exceed the Retail limit for one ZIP Code on one day. Confirm the service and entry plan with USPS or your mailing provider.
What full-service fulfillment is actually worth
The linked printer rate card adds a per-piece charge that includes postage, with preparation extras separately noted. Subtracting the Retail postage input leaves the calculator’s $0.07 per-piece service allowance, or $350 on the example run, before extras.
That allowance is based on one provider’s published terms, not a market average or a complete fulfillment quote. Ask whether banding, shrink wrapping, shipping to the postal unit and proof of mailing are included.
Be careful with “it costs more to do it yourself”
Compare the same stock, quantity, shipping and services. Separate the print quote from postage and preparation so the difference is visible. Then decide whether the time saved is worth the quoted service charge in your circumstances.
How many advertisers cover the drop?
For a shared-card operator, the revenue comes from selling ad spots. To find how many equal-priced spots cover printing and postage, divide that subtotal by the collected price per spot and round up to a whole spot. Use money actually collected, not reservations or unpaid promises. If spots have different prices, compare their combined collections with the subtotal.
That is a different calculation from the customers an advertiser needs to recover the cost of their ad. This guide models the operator’s mailing budget; it does not forecast an advertiser’s sales.
At the assumed advertised spot price of $477, 6 collected spots cover printing and postage for the example run. Other expenses can require more placements to reach full business break-even.
The method guide’s table shows unsold, partially filled and sold-out scenarios. Those are calculations, not measured operator earnings. The pricing survey reports advertised prices, not settled transactions.
Common questions
Is a larger print run cheaper per card? The listed tiers can reduce unit printing cost at higher quantities. You still need advertisers and a delivery plan that justify the larger commitment.
Can I use another printer? Yes. Compare written quotes and confirm the final piece meets the requirements for your selected mailing service.
Who handles printing and mailing? Your outside provider. Platform fulfillment is not available today and remains on the roadmap.
What changed in this article? The September 13, 2026 revision labels the figures as printing and postage subtotals, corrects the fulfillment allowance, and removes the implication that the remainder is net income.
